Communism & An American Symbol

I came across a story on foxnews.com and the Associated Press, that reported that the Empire State Building's light were yellow and red (they are normally white) in celebration of the "bloody Communist takeover" in China. Here are my questions:
Why would the people at the Empire State Building want to celebrate Communisms takeover? Or even think that it was okay to celebrate the takeover? I am absolutely baffled! As the article stated, the Empire State Building is an American Monument, it represents America, why would Americans celebrate something that is so not American, actually the opposite of American. Ias this a time where we sympathize or celebrate Communism? This is actually scary, why is this acceptable? This is very strange & I am very confused. My father would definetly say that this relates to Obama being in office and it represents his administration!
I did not see this story visibly on Comcast news or CNN. It was visible on CNN & Fox as well as the Associated Press. I think that this story is quite important and the American people need to know about this, if this would have been done 50 years ago, people probably would have gone mad! I am just so confused and baffled over this decision to celebrate the Communism takeover. Aren't we going backwards? I thought that we were trying to advance in the world and not celebrate the oppresion of an entire nation! This should bother the American people, my Father sounds crazy sometimes but he has this knack for always being right!

  1. I did a quick Google search and found articles corroborating the story.

It appears, based on the information that is available, that the incident was a diplomatic gesture by the private owners of the building that was poorly thought out. City Democrats and City Republicans are apparently speaking in unanimity that the gesture by the building’s general manager was an upsetting one. The New York Times editorial and comments page is rife with ‘what the hell?’ remarks. The vast majority of people in the city seem to disapprove.

I have no information that indicates that the manager of the building has sympathy with the Chinese system of government, but it does appear that he is both politically imprudent and insensitive to the tyrannical history of the Chinese revolution. It appears that China’s consul in New York City was the one who flipped the switch to change the color of the lights.

I'm getting conflicting information on how common it is for the owners of the building to do this.

No information yet seems to indicate that Obama had anything to do with it, and I have no reason to believe that his administration would be involved. It seems unlikely, given that he has no connection to Communism, and that any such move would be blithely reckless in opening his administration to attacks from his opposition. I don’t say that out of political passion for one side or another. I just don't see a substantial case for such speculation. It is important to base conjecture on evidence available, and not on hysteria or partisan heat.

Partisan news sources like FOX, MSNBC, or any of the various pundits, never have an allegiance to objective reality or pure investigative journalism. If any news source presents a picture other than what investigative evidence and verification indicates, then that source is unworthy of the name ‘journalism’. In this case, that would mean implicating or insinuating Obama’s involvement without any actual confirmation or evidence, or indicating that this is part of a trend. Insinuation is the most treacherous and common tool to plant fear. Many of these sources specialize only in exporting their own apprehensions and misunderstandings to target audiences.

  2. If not for the Chinese, we will be in a depression, and who is to say that the Chinese does not own the building?

In all seriousness, the light has been used to celebrate all types of things for a long time now, but you've got to understand Foxnews, their Americanism is just to promote anti-Obama sentiment and nothing else..under which President did China have a trade advantage over the United States? George Bush, was Foxnews outraged when that was happening? NO. I am not sure what you intend to convey with this blog, but you are doing what Foxnews want you to do...Get scared...even though they sold the country out last 8 years.

  3. Even though people may not agree, it is still their 1st Amendment right to do it. I'm not sure exactly how it would relate to the Obama administration though... It's almost like saying "If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to see it, is Obama still to blame?" I'm sure FoxNews would say yes.

  4. I should highlight that there is no need to dog-pile on FOX here; any partisan programming or pundit is capable of contorting information based on their own views and apprehensions.

This is why I dislike cable news as a whole, or radio, or anything else which has forsaken actual journalism. FOX is dreadful, but so are all of them. MSNBC is just a mirror of FOX. Cable is a vapid place for news. They repeat the target audience's political assumptions and apprehensions and escalate them. Pundits are even worse, no matter what their beliefs are. Not necessarily just for supposed partisanship, but because they are so habituated to shoddy information collection and presentation. Absorbing such sources as if they were an actual window into objective reality opens an otherwise rational person up to infections of misinformation and partisanship.

This is just one example out of thousands of distorted stories that occur each year that float around and mingle with genuine information. They don’t originate from just one area of the political spectrum. Some exaggerations or fabrications exist only in obscurity, and others are raised to the level of national dialogue, such as the ‘death panels’, or Sarah Palin’s ‘wardrobe controversy’.

  5. I did not hear about this and this is very interesting! I don't think Obama had anything to do with it though. America celebrates all kinds of nations, so this does not surprise me. We celebrate the killing of the Native Americans on Thanksgiving. We celebrate Cino de Mayo... I could see Americans celebrating Communism.
